The Russian Black Terrier Club Code of Ethics

Members of the Russian Black Terrier Club undertake to abide by the Club’s General Code of Ethics and that they:

1. Will properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under their care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if and when required.

2. Will agree without reservation that any veterinary surgeon who performs an operation on any of their dogs which alters the natural conformation of the animal, or who carries out a caesarean section on a bitch, may report such operations to the KennelClub.

3. Will agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes.

4. Will abide by all aspects of the Animal Welfare Act.

5. Will not create demand for, nor supply, puppies that have been docked illegally.

6. Will agree not to breed from a dog or bitch which could be in any way harmful to the dog or to the breed.

7. Will not allow any of their dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties. 

8.Will ensure that their dogs wear properly tagged collars and will be kept leashed or under effective control when away from home.

9. Will clean up after their dogs in public places or anywhere that their dogs are being exhibited.

10. Will only sell dogs where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life and will help with the re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.

11. Will supply written details of all dietary requirements and give guidance concerning responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home.

12. Will ensure that all relevant Kennel Club documents are provided to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available.

13. Will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind. Will not sell by sale or auction Kennel Club registration certificates as stand alone items (not accompanying a dog).

14. Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.

15. Will agree that Health and Welfare is our priority and,  to the best of their ability, will fully explain to all prospective Russian Black Terrier purchasers not only the advantages, but also the disadvantages, of owning and the bringing up the breed and will not participate in mixed breeding or the breeding of Russian Black Terriers that are Kennel Club registered as endorsed by the breeder as Not For Breeding’, and/or are registered as Non-Standard.

16. Will agree the Russian Black Terrier is a large breed which should not be mated before the age of 2 years and only then depending on the bitch's physical and mental health.

17. Will agree to abide by the Russian Black Terrier Club's recommendation that no bitch should whelp on two successive seasons and never without regard to the well being and general health of this bitch and not to whelp from any Russian Black Terrier bitch after the age of 7 and that a bitch produces no more than 4 litters.

18. Will agree not to breed a litter, if they do not have the time and facilities to devote to the proper care and attention to the rearing of the litter and the after care of the mother. If a puppy or adult sold by the breeder requires re-homing at any time it is the responsibility of the breeder to take full charge of the Russian Black Terrier that they bred.

19. Will agree and accept their responsibilities to these puppies, and confirm that they will not let any puppy go to its new owner before that puppy is eight weeks old and that each puppy be accompanied with a diet sheet, grooming routine, care routine, and veterinary health check..

20. Will agree not to allow or provide stud service from any of their dogs, unless the am satisfied that the owner of the bitch making the enquires has such time and facilities.

21.  Will agree that if they should become aware of any mistreatment of a Russian Black Terrier dog or bitch, that they will report this in writing to the secretary of the Russian Black Terrier Club for discussion by the Committee.

22.  Will agree, when breeding dogs, to adopt as a minimum standard the principles, requirements and recommendations as embodied in the Kennel Club’s Assured Breeder Scheme. It is strongly recommended that members who breed should apply to join the Scheme.

23. Will only breed from those dogs and bitches believed to be clear from known serious hereditary defects. All breeding stock born on or after January 1st 2011 shall have been x-rayed and scored under the BVA/KC HD [Hip Dysplasia] Scheme and have been x-rayed and scored under the BVA/KC ED [Elbow Dysplasia] Scheme. In the case of foreign stud dogs/imports, scores from the country of origins comparable scoring scheme are also acceptable.

24. Will agree that any and all breeding stock will have been tested to establish their HUU (Hyperuricosuria) and JLPP (Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis & Polyneuropathy) status and the results of such tests recorded with the Kennel Club. In the case of hereditarily clear stock both parents should have test results recorded with the Kennel Club. 

25. Will endeavour not to produce affected dogs.

Breach of these provisions may result in expulsion from club membership, and/or disciplinary action by the Kennel Club and/or reporting to the relevant authorities for legal action, as appropriate.
